Description

Andromeda Botanic Gardens is located on the Atlantic coast of Barbados near to Tent bay at Bathsheba.

The gardens sit on the boundary of the parishes of St. John and St. Joseph about 300 yards from the Atlantic Ocean.

The East Coast of Barbados is breathtakingly beautiful and is the perfect setting for Botanic Gardens like those at Andromeda.

Andromeda Gardens was established by Iris Bannochie (1914-1988) and her husband at the time Dr Harry Bayley around her holiday home in St Joseph. These Gardens are a collection of different plants from many other tropical and sub-tropical locations, either collected by Iris Bannochie herself, or given to her as gifts. Mrs Bannochie was the foremost horticulturalist in Barbados and was awarded the prestigious Veitch Medal by the Royal Horticultural Society, England. She bequeathed Andromeda Gardens to the Barbados National Trust in 1988 so that her legacy could live on and be enjoyed by visitors from within Barbados and around the globe.

Iris Bannochie was devoted to horticultural training and a wide range of horticultural courses including design workshops and practical horticulture programmes are all available at Andromeda Botanic Gardens. Take part in one of the Workshops – principles of design are universal!

Sustainability – This is a positive movement and Andromeda Botanic Gardens has adopted a variety of eco-friendly practices. Only organic pest controls are used and green fertilizer is grown in the Gardens.

Come and visit this unique garden. Walk through the winding pathways as you journey through this horticultural delight. Be amazed at the variety of unique trees, some of which are not found anywhere else in the Caribbean. Have a look at the wonderful palm collection; marvel at some of the succulent plants; be mesmerized by wonderful perfumes; and watch the hummingbirds as they feed on the Heliconias. Relax by the main pond and enjoy the spirit of this wonderful space. Welcome to Andromeda Botanic Gardens, Barbados!
